OCS SPONSORSHIP

OCS are proud to be an official sponsor of the 2012 Irish Paralympic Team.

The partnership agreement sees OCS becoming title sponsor of the inaugural Irish Paralympic Awards which will take place following the team’s return from the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. The OCS Irish Paralympic Awards will be the first of its kind in Irish Paralympic Sport, honouring the achievements, successes and contributions of the Irish Paralympic team and its support network over the London cycle.

Announcing the partnership agreement, PCI Chief Executive Officer, Liam Harbison stated: “We are extremely pleased and excited to have such a leading established Irish organisation such as OCS Ireland partner the Irish Paralympic Team for what is effectively a home Games in London. As title sponsor of our inaugural Irish Paralympic awards, OCS Ireland and its team will be at the heart of celebrating and honouring the best of this Irish Paralympic team."

Speaking at the partnership announcement Cecil Ryan, Regional Managing Director OCS Europe, said: “OCS are delighted to be associated with the Irish Paralympic Team over the course of the next two years as the athletes strive to realise their sporting dreams in London. The athletes are a great source of inspiration and it will be exciting and motivational for our team at OCS to support and be associated with the entire team. We at OCS look forward to celebrating the achievements of the Irish team and its committed support staff, at the inaugural awards post London 2012, which will undoubtedly be an occasion to remember”.

The Paralympic Council of Ireland was founded in 1987 and is responsible for the preparation and management of the Irish team in the lead up to, and at, the Paralympic Games, and the development of Paralympic sport in Ireland.

Olympic style games for elite athletes with a physical disability were first held in Rome in 1960. Today, the Paralympic Games are a major global sporting event for elite athletes with disabilities. The Games emphasise the participants’ athletic achievements rather than their disability. Athletes compete in various classes of competition, and are classified according to their disability.

The movement has grown dramatically since its first days. The number of athletes participating in Summer Paralympic Games has increased from 400 athletes from 23 countries in Rome in 1960 to over 4000 athletes from 153 countries in Beijing in 2008. London will host the 2012 Games. Ireland has a proud tradition at the Games, winning 5 medals (3 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze) in Beijing 2008.
